Everyone has grown up with once a week breakfast to be homemade French toasts. They are easy-peasy, wholesome and qualify as soul food. They are probably one of the first dishes one learns to make at home.
Have you tried making your French toasts in an oven? This way you can avoid using oil and can make do with just a brush of butter. I also make mine nutty, cinnamon-y and crunchy. And I make them sugar-free and peppery.
My food word for this recipe would be comforting.
When you go out shopping look for;
Bread slices, it is great if you use brown bread or multi grain bread
Corn flakes
Vanilla extract
Cinnamon powder
Almonds
Raisins
Eggs
Milk
Butter
Salt
Pepper
The recipe would be;
Chop eight almonds with skin. Hand crumble corn flakes. Mix the almond bits and the corn flakes loosely and set them on a flat plate. Pre heat your oven to two hundred and twenty degrees. Brush a pie dish with salted butter; do not be stingy with the butter.
Cut bread slices diagonally keeping the crust.
Beat a couple of eggs in a bowl with a whisk. Add four tbsp milk and beat again. To this add a pinch of cinnamon, a drop of vanilla extract, salt and a tsp of pepper. Beat one more time. Next spoon in a tsp of raisins and blend in.
Now soak the slices in the egg, remember do not over soak as then the inside portions do not cook and remain soggy. Soak and flip ought to be your quick actions. Next pat them on the flakes and almond mix on both sides and set each slice on your ready pie dish. I use a pie dish because I want something flat with a small edge.
Set them to toast at hundred and fifty degrees Celcius. They come out crisp and tasty.
